Take careful note of your existing furniture. Take pictures of your furniture in the room if you are keeping it to help match your new color at the paint store.
Look at bright and light colors when selecting your paint color. Make sure it will go with the color of any other rooms the walls join up with. Bright colors reflect more light, causing the space to appear brighter.
Choose a paint color that is a similar color to the furniture, rugs or other features in the room. Staying within a single color family makes the space look brighter and bigger.
Ask for the paint in something slightly glossier than a flat matte finish. The glossier the paint, the brighter the room will appear to be. Eggshell is also a good finish to create a bright feel within a room.
Paint your ceiling a bright color as well. You can use the same color as the walls or a complimentary bright color. Dark colors on the ceiling tend to draw the ceiling down and make the room feel cozy rather than bright and open.
