How to Install Drywall Around Outlets

When mounting drywall, you’ll often come across an installed outlet for which you’ll need to make a cutout to make room through the drywall. The cutout must be exact, matching hold to outlet precisely so that you can later install outlet covers over the drywall surface, allowing access to the outlet itself. To do so requires precise measuring and then using those measurements to mark the drywall, with cut lines to follow. It isn’t difficult, but the process leaves little room for error or panel repair may be the result.

Instructions

Place a plumb line onto each side of the outlet and lower the weight at the end until it touches the floor. Mark the weight’s location on the floor with a piece of chalk.

Place the drywall against the wall next to the outlet, propped against the wall, as you would position it for installation. Measure the distance from the bottom of the outlet to the top of the drywall panel, and then measure the height of the outlet.

Place the drywall panel against the wall over the outlet in its installation position. Use the markings from the plumb line on the floor to mark the location of both edges of the outlet onto the front of the panel, at the bottom, with a pencil. Use the tape measure to make a mark onto the panel at the height of the bottom of the outlet, using the measurements taken, and then measure from that mark up the height of the outlet and make another mark. Place a straightedge onto the panel and draw two lines connecting the two height marks using the marks from the bottom of the panel for the two outlet edges. Use the straightedge to complete the outlet cutting lines by drawing two lines for the top and bottom of the outlet, connecting the two edge lines.

Cut out the marked outlet with a utility knife. The outlet should fit between the newly cut opening, allowing you to install the drywall panel against the wall without covering it up.
