How to Make Whitewashed Paint

If you have an outbuilding that has dark walls inside and you want to brighten them up without spending a lot of money on paint, consider whitewash. It's easy to mix and uses ingredients available in home and garden or feed stores. Whitewash contains lime and salt, and lime has antibacterial properties, a benefit when using it around animals, especially in chicken coops where the eggs are harvested for human consumption.

      Choose hydrated lime to make the whitewash. The other kind of lime, called garden or agricultural lime, is gray and not suitable for making whitewash.

      Use a large bucket or pail to mix the whitewash whose size depends on how much you whitewash you want to make.

      Cover your mouth and nose with a dust mask and put on gloves. Lime can irritate your respiratory tract and can burn your skin if you have direct contact with it.

      Measure 6 cups of hydrated lime, 2 cups of salt and 1 gallon of water for each gallon of whitewash that you need. Mix the ingredients together gradually rather than all at once to ease the mixing process. Continue to mix until all the ingredients are thoroughly combined.
