How to Grout a Flagstone Wall

Flagstone on walls is hung with wide and irregular spacing between the stones, and has a rough, contoured surface. Both these factors make it difficult to grout the wall in the traditional manner of spreading the grout over the surface with a float and pressing it into the spaces. An easier solution is a grout bag, which allows targeted placement of the grout between the stones.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix the grout with water in your bucket, in the ratio specified on the grout packaging, using a drill and mixing bar. Blend it thoroughly to the consistency of cake frosting. Make enough to grout the whole wall, according to the coverage chart that should be listed on the grout packaging.

    • 2

Let the mixed grout sit undisturbed in the bucket for 10 minutes. Stir it again with the mixing bar.

    • 3

Scoop the grout into the open back end of the grout bag with a putty knife, filling the bag about two-thirds full. Close the bag.

    • 4

Press the tip of the grout bag into one of the spaces between the flagstones at the top of the wall. Squeeze the bag with both hands until it expels grout into the space.

    • 5

Drag the bag along the line while continuing to squeeze it, filling the line with grout. Repeat for each line, refilling the bag as needed. Wipe away any grout that gets on the stones with a damp sponge.

    • 6

Run your putty knife gently over the new grout lines to flatten them out.
