Painting Over Thick Paint on a Wall

Textured paint is used in many homes to create the look of textured walls. The textured paint allows you to get the textured look without as many steps needed. Textured paint is thick but water soluble, so the paint can soften or come off when you try to apply paint directly over it. If you have thick textured paint in your home, it is important to know how to paint over it. Incorrectly painting over thick, textured paint may result in you needing to completely remove the textured paint before applying paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Vacuum the walls to ensure they are free of dirt, dust and other debris.

    • 2

Dump a small amount of fast-drying alkyd painting primer into a paint try. Fast-drying alkyd primer will seal the textured paint so it does not get wet from the latex paint. Roll the paint roller in the primer, and apply the primer to the walls in a “W” motion. Cover the textured paint completely. Allow the primer to dry. Apply a second coat of primer as needed.

    • 3

Pour a latex paint into a paint tray. Use a paint roller to paint the walls in a “W” motion. Once the wall is covered, let it dry completely. Repeat two more times or as needed.
