Design Ideas for Building a Wall Separating Two Rooms

Separating a single large room into two smaller rooms may be necessary if you need extra bedrooms or storage areas. When you start planning your wall-building project, getting creative can be to your advantage. Consider practical, decorative and functional ways to build a new interior wall to separate two rooms.
  1. Half Wall

    • One of the wall designs that you can use to separate two rooms but still allow for an open look to your living space is a half-wall, which can come up to approximately waist high. A variation on the half-wall idea that will allow you to give the space that open feeling but also give some privacy is to build a wall with a large window-type opening. You can put shades in the window opening to allow for privacy.

    Folding Walls

    • You can create two separate rooms out of one room but still retain the ability to open up the space if you need to. Temporary folding walls are common in banquet and meeting halls where large rooms are often divided into smaller rooms to accommodate guests. You can use the same concept in your home by using large folding closet doors as walls or building your own folding walls that run on tracks mounted in the ceiling and floor.

    Bookcase

    • If you are just trying to create a boundary to designate two separate rooms but do not necessarily need privacy in either of the new rooms, build a wall of open bookcases as your dividing wall. Use the square or diamond bookcase pattern to give your walls an individualized but functional look. Square bookcase segments offer a more practical way to store books or other items while diamond-shaped bookcases tend to be more decorative. You could also build bookcase walls that are bookshelves on one side and decorative paneling on the other.

    Glass Block Wall

    • A glass block wall can give privacy and a decorative look to your home; however, your floors must support the weight of a glass block wall before you begin installation. Give your plans to a professional contractor, and ask him to determine the weight specifications of your project. Tinted glass block offers privacy, and you can add lighting inside your glass block wall for an unusual decorative touch.
