Soak the clay in a mixture of 1 part water to 3 parts clay. The mixture should be the thickness of frosting. If the clay is not breaking down into the water, then obtain a mixing paddle drill attachment from the hardware store and mix the clay with the tool until it begins breaking down.
Leave the clay to sit overnight. This will completely soften and saturate the clay, making it workable.
Tape some 1/8-inch screen over a clean bucket with duct tape. Make sure the screen is firmly fastened.
Scoop the soaked clay out of the soaking bucket and through the screen into the clean bucket, smoothing the top over as necessary. This will strain out any large particles.
Combine 1 part clay and 3 parts sand in a clean bucket and add enough water to make a molasses-like consistency. Use the mixing attachment to break down the clay and amend it with the sand.
Add any desired pigment and apply directly to a sanded wall.
