How to Find Studs Through a Brick Facade

When you’re searching for studs within your home’s walls, it becomes a trickier task when the wall is made of a material other than drywall or plaster. Simply knocking on the wall will get you nowhere if your wall is covered in brick. If you find yourself needing to locate a stud through a brick facade, the most efficient way to do so is with an electronic stud finder, which determines the locations of studs by measuring the density of the wall.

Place the stud finder flat against the wall at a corner. Slowly move the stud finder along the wall until it either makes a noise or flashes a light to indicate that it has found a stud.

    • 2

Mark the wall at the location where the stud finder began indicating a stud. Continue to move the stud finder across the wall until it stops flashing or beeping, then make another mark. This is where the stud ends.

Use a measuring tape to measure the distance from the corner of the wall to the area where a stud was indicated. Wall studs are generally located at 16- or 24-inch intervals. Measure another 16 or 24 inches from the first detected stud, then use the stud finder to detect whether there is a stud there as well. If the stud finder’s indications match up to the measurements, you can be certain that you have found studs in the wall.
