How to Turn a Door Into Wall Art

Lay the door flat and sand it lightly so the new paint and primer will easily adhere to it.

Add primer when the door is bare wood or stained wood. If the wood is a dark color, you will need primer to paint it lighter. Also, if the door was painted with a different kind of paint, such as oil when you want to use latex, add primer.

Use a roller to roll the paint over the door. Then, paint over the door with a brush to paint bare spots and make the door look more neatly painted. Always go with the grain, or the paint job will not look professional.

Locate the stud in the wall. Knock on different parts of the wall until you hit a spot that seems harder than the rest. Hammer a nail through the part where you think a stud is located. When there is a stud, the nail will not go easily through that part of the wall. If the nail does go in easily, you may still be close to a stud, but only a few inches off. Try moving to the side slightly and hammer the nail in, to hunt down the hard spot.

Hammer two nails into the place where you would like to hang the door, to give the door extra sturdiness.

Get hanging wire that is around four gauge to ensure the wire can hold the door. Find two points on the door, one on the left side and one on the right. Screw clips into these points. Feed the wire through the eyes of the clips and cut it with long-nose pliers. Leave an even amount of wire on each side. Loop the wire around the eyes twice. Leave the wire somewhat loose so it can bend a little bit as it holds the weight of the door.

Ask someone to help you lift the door. Carefully place the door on the nails.
