DIY How to Texture Drywall Using a Graco Sprayer With a Hopper

Covering a drywall wall or ceiling with a joint compound texture can add new life or give a different look to a room. While there are many methods of applying the texture, a spray-on compound application is most common, quickly providing an even texture covering. A Graco sprayer with a hopper attached to the top makes for an efficient application tool. The hopper is large enough to hold enough texture material to cover a residential wall or ceiling, while the gun itself is a versatile application tool, allowing a variety of air pressures and nozzles to be applied to change the appearance of the texture. Using the sprayer, you can not only create visually interesting surfaces, but alspcover up any minor mistakes made in the drywall application.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the base of the floor along the wall that you’re texturing with a drop cloth. Place masking tape along any adjacent surfaces you don’t wish to cover with texture and remove electrical outlet covers with a screwdriver, covering the outlet openings with masking tape. If texturing the ceiling, cover the entire floor and any furnishings with drop cloths and the walls with plastic sheeting.

    • 2

Remove the small plug from the hopper port located at the top of the sprayer where the hopper connects to the spray gun's body. Pull the small gun plug clip from the side of the port cylinder and then pull the plug from the cylinder and set it aside.

    • 3

Rotate the base of the hopper until the small opening at the base lines up with the notch on the edge of the port. Push the hopper down onto the port until it clicks into place, and then tighten the clamp at the base of the hopper tightly onto the gun port with a screwdriver to lock the hopper onto the gun body.

Screw the air hose leading from the compressor to the bottom of the gun and remove the hose plug at the bottom of the gun port. Remove the nozzle cover from the front of the gun port cylinder and screw a drywall texture nozzle in its place.

    • 5

Mix the joint compound for the texture in a large bucket with a wooden stir stick. Add enough water to the compound to create a mix that has the consistency of cake batter to give you a smooth spray.

    • 6

Fill the hopper on the gun with the texture mix, and then open the air valve at the base of the gun in the rear, next to the air hose connection. Turn on the air compressor.

    • 7

Set the air volume of the compressor on low for a knockdown texture, or medium for orange peel, splatter coat or an acoustic look.

    • 8

Hold the gun about eight inches from the spraying surface. Pull the trigger to start the flow of texture. Move the gun continuously, using a back-and-forth motion to spray the texture where desired until you’ve covered the surface with the texturing pattern and density you want. Allow the texture to dry for 24 hours after application.
