How to Install Insulated Sheathing on Interior Walls

Insulated sheathing is a type of insulation designed for easy home installation. These rigid foam panels are encased in a moisture-resistant wrapping and can be easily moved, cut and applied to uninsulated interior walls, like those in most basements. Installing insulated sheathing is a good job for the do-it-yourself homeowner, and you'll probably see some significant energy savings after you complete the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height and width of the wall or walls you'll be insulating. Use this information to determine the number of panels you'll need to purchase.

    • 2

Place a panel at one corner of your wall. Mark the outer edge of the panel onto the wall with a pencil. Remove the panel. If the panel needs to be trimmed to work around any obstructions, or to fit in the space, place a straight edge onto the panel at the point where it needs to be cut. Draw a utility knife along the straight edge to score the panel. Snap off the excess at the score mark with your hands.

    • 3

Lay a bead of construction adhesive on the wall at the desired location. Place the panel against the wall and press it firmly against the adhesive until the panel sticks in place.

    • 4

Place your next panel against the first panel. Trim if necessary and apply the panel to the wall with construction adhesive. Continue until you've covered all the wall surfaces.

    • 5

Tape over the seams between the panels with vinyl tape. This helps prevent drafts and air seepage.
