How to Lay Tiles on an Uneven Concrete Wall

The mixture of cement and aggregates in concrete leaves behind small bumps and dips on the finished surface. A concrete wall develops additional problems over time, which create an uneven finish. Cracks, gouges, chips and even missing chunks of concrete create a bumpy wall. Laying concrete on an uneven surface requires the use of a leveling compound. The compound goes on smoothly and fills in the bumps and ridges, making it possible to lay tiles on the surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the wall with concrete cleaner and a sponge. Mix the cleaner with warm water, if the manufacturer recommends diluting the compound. Rinse exterior walls and outdoor concrete with a garden hose and use a sponge dipped in fresh water for interior surfaces.

Pour the leveling compound in a plastic bucket and mix with water, following the recommendations of the manufacturer. Stir the compound with a paint stirrer or wood stick. Mix the product until the product looks smooth and no air bubbles are visible.

    • 3

Apply the leveling compound to the wall with a putty knife. Focus on the uneven areas of the wall, including any damaged spaces or missing concrete surfaces. Pull the putty knife across the compound, smoothing out any air bubbles or bumps. Let the wall dry for at least 24 hours.

Paint the tile adhesive on the surface, which is now smooth and dry. Place your tiles directly on the wall, working from the left to right and from the top to the bottom. Press each tile against the adhesive and wiggle gently, making sure the adhesive holds to the back of the tiles.

Cover the tiled wall with a layer of grout. Apply the grout with a trowel, making sure the grout reaches the areas between tiles. Run a damp cloth or towel over the wall, wiping off any extra grout stuck to the tiles. Wipe down the wall while the grout is still wet or soft to the touch.
