How to Lay Drywall on Top of Eco-Block

Eco-Block is a foam-sided building system used to create residential and commercial structures. The blocks are manufactured with an internal webbing that serves the same function as wood studs in traditional buildings. Once the blocks are in place, finishing the interiors with drywall using the webbing is much the same as working with a wood frame. However, there are a few specifications concerning the fasteners needed and the location of the webbing that you should be aware of when installing the drywall.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Drywall panels
  • #6 coarse thread screws

Instructions

    • 1

Install the subfloor for the room before laying drywall against the walls.

    • 2

Measure the dimensions of the Eco-Block wall where you’re installing the drywall panels, using a tape measure. Subtract 1/2 an inch from the measurement to leave a 1/4-inch gap at the base and at of the wall for expansion. Measure the drywall panels as well. Use the two measurements to plot out the positioning of the panels on the walls, using as many full-sized panels as possible.

    • 3

Place the drywall panel against the wall, flush with the surface of the blocks.

    • 4

Attach the panels using #6 coarse thread screws. Drive the screws every 8 inches through the drywall and into the lines of plastic webbing located in the Eco-Blocks. The webs are located beneath the deeper grooves running vertically through the block surfaces. Use a drill with a screwdriver bit to drive the screws into place, creating a line of them along the webbing spaced 6 inches apart. Stagger the panels at the joints in adjacent rows, with a new row’s joint beginning 16 inches away from the previous row placed.

Cut the panels as needed with a utility knife, either to cover a smaller space or to create the staggered joints. Score the panels with the knife, using a straightedge held against the panels as your guide at the cutting position. Snap the scored panel towards the knife line to break it where needed. Screw the partial panel into place.
