How to Install Drywall Stripping

Drywall comes in 4-by-8 foot sheets. These dimensions allow one drywall sheet to span across six wall studs, with both ends centered over a stud. This makes the installation of full drywall sheets quick and easy. However, usually a wall's dimensions do not allow you to completely cover it with full drywall sheets. In that case, you must cut a drywall sheet into a strip that fits in the leftover space. Installation of these strips remains similar to the installation of a full sheet.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the space from the last full sheet of drywall to the end of the wall. Lean a full drywall sheet against a wall. Transfer the measurement you just took to the drywall sheet, approximately three inches from the upper edge. Transfer the measurement a second time, this time approximately three inches up from the bottom edge.

Connect the two marks with a T-square. Cut the drywall with a utility knife, using the T-square as a straight edge.

    • 3

Move behind the drywall sheet and place both hands on the upper edge, one hand on either side of the line you just cut. Tap the drywall sheet's back with your knee to bend it along the cut line. Cut through the paper backing, along the bend line, to separate the strip you need from the full drywall sheet.

Position the drywall strip in the space you measured in Step 1. Both of the strip's ends should rest over a wall stud. Drive a row of four drywall screws through the drywall and into each stud the strip covers. Place one screw about two inches from the top edge, another screw about two inches from the bottom edge, and two more screws evenly spaced between the first two screws. Sink the screw heads slightly below the drywall's surface.
