How to Install Glass Tile Accents

Glass tile costs more than ceramic tile, making it an expensive project to tile an entire shower, wall or backsplash with glass. An alternative option is to use cheaper tiles for the majority of the wall covering with glass tiles used as accents. One common option is to incorporate a narrow strip of glass tiles across the tiled area with the other type of tiles above and below it. You might also add in squares of the glass tiles randomly or border the area with glass.

Instructions

    • 1

Design the layout of the tiles. Determine how much glass tile you want to incorporate and how it will accent the other type of tile.

    • 2

Measure the area where the glass tile will go. Mark the areas on the wall where the glass tile will go as a guide during installation.

    • 3

Cut the sheets of glass tile to fit into the area. The small glass tiles usually come attached to a sheet of paper so you are able to install several at once so you only need to cut the paper to customize the area the tiles cover.

    • 4

Install the main tile, non-glass starting at the bottom of the wall or backsplash and working up. Stop with this tile when you get to an area where you plan to place the glass tile.

    • 5

Spread white thinset mortar with a latex additive onto the area where the glass tiles will go. Run the trowel over the thinset with the notched edge. Smooth the ridges gently with the flat edge of the trowel to ensure the ridges won't show through the glass.

    • 6

Press the glass tile onto the area where you want it, using the marks you made as a guide. Hold a board over the tile and tap gently with a hammer to get the tiles even, especially where two sections of tile sheets meet.

    • 7

Add the remaining tile of the other material above the glass tile.

    • 8

Dampen the paper on the front of the glass tile after it has been in place for 20 to 30 minutes. Pull the saturated paper off of the tile at an angle. Adjust the tiles as necessary if they move as you pull off the paper.

    • 9

Let all of the tiles set for 48 hours. Grout the glass tile along with the rest of the tile by using a grout float to apply the grout to the joints. Wipe away the excess grout with the edge of the float. Wipe the tiles with a clean, dampened sponge after 30 minutes.
