How to Fix Bubbling Sheetrock Tape

Bubbles under drywall or sheet rock tape can occur because of wall movement or because not enough compound was applied under the tape to hold it in place. It can also be due to improper sheet rock installation, not butting the sheet rock panels up against each other tightly enough. The repair is fairly straightforward, using only a few supplies. If the bubbles appeared before painting, repair is simpler. If the bubbles appeared after painting, you'll have to remove the tape in the area of the bubble, cut a small piece of tape to fit the space and apply the new tape during the repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut across the bottom of the bubble with a box cutter or single-edge razor blade. Carefully peel the tape back, using the small putty knife if necessary, to expose the joint compound beneath it.

    • 2

Scrape off the old joint compound carefully with the small putty knife. Avoid damaging the drywall.

    • 3

Apply a 1/8 inch thick layer of fresh drywall mud to the drywall under the bubble.

    • 4

Fold the tape back into place. Use the flexible taping knife to smooth the tape and squeeze out the excess joint compound, leaving at least a 1/16 inch thick layer beneath the tape.

    • 5

Apply a new layer of joint compound over the tape, spreading it smoothly and pressing the tape into the mud. Let the joint compound dry for 24 hours.

    • 6

Sand the area until it is smooth. If necessary, add another layer of joint compound and let it dry. Sand again. Prime and paint the area to match the rest of the wall.
