Do-It-Yourself Mold-Resistant Wall Panels

If you are replacing walls in a kitchen or bathroom where moisture is a problem, regular drywall will not work. While greenboard is water-resistant, it is not completely waterproof. For a mold-resistant wall material, tile board is best. This type of wall panel will require a different technique during the installation process to ensure you create a watertight seal between the panels. Otherwise, moisture and mold still can be an issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the wall for the tile board. Tile board is typically sold in 4-by-8-foot panels. Determine how many whole panels you will need and how many panels will need to be cut to fit. For example, if you have a wall that is 8 feet wide and 10 feet tall, you would need two whole panels and one panel cut in half horizontally to fit the wall.

    • 2

Make your cut lines on the back of the tile board with a pencil, using a yardstick to help you get a straight line.

    • 3

Position a rotary saw at the top of the panel and move it down along your line to cut the panel.

    • 4

Squeeze construction-grade adhesive in a zig-zag pattern on the back of the tile board.

    • 5

Cover the front of the wall studs with a thick coat of adhesive.

    • 6

Firmly press the tile board onto the wall studs so the adhesive can get a strong grip. Continue until all the panels are up on the walls.

    • 7

Apply pieces of masking tape around the joints between the tile board and along the edges of the tile board. Leave a space that is 1/4-inch wide between your pieces of tape.

    • 8

Load a tube of silicone caulk into a caulk gun. Depress the plunger to lay down a 1/4-inch bead of silicone caulk on the joints and edges.

    • 9

Smooth out the caulk with your finger, if you are wearing gloves, or the back of a spoon.

    • 10

Remove the masking tape immediately or the caulk will adhere it permanently to the tile board.
