How to Install Durock Wall Board Correctly

Durock is a company that specializes in cement boards. In fact, among builders, Durock is the standard board used for most projects and has been since the 1980s. Cement boards are used in place of drywall boards for walls that require tiling or are especially prone to moisture and mold exposure. When installing Durock boards onto a wall, there is a manufacturer-recommended installation method that ensures quality every time.

  • Screwdriver
  • Durock tile backer screws
  • Latex-fortified mortar
  • Putty knife
  • Alkaline-resistant fiberglass mesh

      Connect the wall boards directly to the wall’s studs with a screwdriver and Durock tile backer screws. The boards must be spaced 1/8-inch apart to allow for changes i the weather.

      Fill the spaces between boards with latex-fortified mortar. The simplest way to fill the joints is by pressing the mortar into place with a putty knife.

      Press alkaline-resistant fiberglass mesh directly into the mortar and make sure it is completely embedded in the mortar. If necessary, spread a little more mortar over the top of the fiberglass. You can immediately install your desired tile or other finishing surface over the boards.
