How to Fasten Plastic Sheeting to Cinder Block Walls

Before finishing a cinder block wall, you need to install a vapor barrier. You have a choice of types of vapor barriers, including polyethylene sheeting, which is available in different weights. A high-density style with cross lamination is a tear-resistant product that provides a good vapor barrier. The sheeting is fastened to a cinder block wall using furring strips and masonry screws.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 1-inch treated lumber furring strips
  • Electric saw
  • High-density polyethylene sheeting
  • Utility knife
  • Straightedge
  • Hammer drill
  • 5/32-inch masonry bit
  • 3/16-inch masonry screws

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and height of the cinder block wall. Use the saw to cut furring strips from the treated lumber to cover the length of the wall. Cut lengths of plastic sheeting the height of the wall plus 4 inches.

    • 2

Hold a length of plastic sheeting at the top of the wall, letting it extend about 2 inches at the top and bottom edges of the wall. While an assistant holds the sheeting, place a furring strip in place along the top of the wall. Drill holes through the furring strip and into the cinder block, using the hammer drill and masonry bit. Drill holes along the strip at 2-inch intervals. Brush debris from the holes.

    • 3

Drive masonry screws into the holes, using a standard drill.

    • 4

Repeat the process with additional lengths of plastic sheeting until the wall is covered. Overlap the sections of sheeting by 6 to 8 inches. Tape the seams with pressure-sensitive tape.

    • 5

Stretch the lengths of plastic sheeting taut. Install furring strips along the bottom of the wall in the same manner as you installed the top strips.

    • 6

Trim off excess plastic sheeting along the furring strips at the top and bottom of the wall. Apply acrylic caulk along the top of the furring strip at the top of the wall. Apply caulk along the bottom furring strip at the base of the wall.
