What to Add to Get Concrete to Stick to a Wall

Traditionally, you create concrete walls by pouring concrete into a structure, then removing the structure once the concrete dries. If you want to place concrete on an existing wall, though, you'll find that it tends to slide down. Using the right ingredients can help you get concrete to stick to a wall, whether you're repairing cracks or creating decorative concrete walls.
  1. Lightweight Concrete

    • When trying to cover a large surface area, choose a lightweight, or "vertical," concrete mix. These mixes contain polymers and possibly reinforcing fibers in addition to the cement. They are more suitable for vertical placement than is traditional concrete, as they are not likely to slide off.

    Water

    • All concrete mixes require you to mix them with water before application. When trying to apply the concrete to a vertical surface, however, take care not to add too much water. Your concrete mixture should be thick. If you notice it sliding down the wall, add a bit more powdered concrete to the mixture until it reaches the right consistency.

    Bonding Agent

    • In some cases, you may need a bonding agent to help the concrete stick to the wall. This is a product that you add to the mixture before application. Commercial products are available.

    Undercutting

    • If you're simply repairing a crack in a concrete wall rather than applying concrete to a large surface area, you may need to do some undercutting. Chip away underneath the crack to create a small well where the new concrete can pool. It then becomes easier for the concrete to stick inside the crack.
