How to Install Drywall Between Cabinets

Ideally, drywall should be hung on the wall before the cabinets are placed, but in some cases this isn't possible. For example, if you are replacing the original wall and have not removed the cabinets, you can fit the drywall around the area. Be advised however that the new drywall will extend out onto the cabinets by 1/4 or 1/2 inch, depending on the thickness of the panel. If this is not a problem, installation is a matter of cutting the drywall to fit around the cabinetry.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length between the cabinets with a measuring tape. Get the length and width of the space. Write down the measurements.

    • 2

Cut a drywall panel to fit with a utility knife. Trace the measurements onto the back of the drywall with a pencil. Score this mark with the utility knife. Snap the panel to break it on the score line. Trim away the paper with the knife.

    • 3

Hang the drywall panel with drywall screws and a cordless screwdriver. Fit the drywall between the cabinets. Hold it in place and insert one drywall screw every 12 inches on the wall stud. Line up the edges so there are no gaps between the drywall and the cabinetry.

    • 4

Tape the seams with self-adhesive drywall tape. Roll out the tape onto the seams. Press it down firmly.

    • 5

Apply joint compound over the tape and the screws with a drywall knife. Scrape on a small amount of compound over the screw heads to fill in the depression. Cover the tape with compound, extending the edges out slightly to completely cover the tape. Let the compound set until it is hard to the touch -- typically around four hours.

Sand down the joint compound with a fine-grit sanding block. The surface should be even and smooth to the touch. You can now finish the drywall with primer and paint.
