Anchoring the End of a Pony Wall

A pony wall is a partial wall or half wall. Pony walls make good room dividers, such as a dividing the kitchen from the dining room. The end of a pony wall must be properly anchored so it is stable, and you can anchor the end of a pony wall with hardware and a couple of basic tools.

Instructions

Place the pony wall in the desired position. Slide the pony wall against the interior wall that it is joining. The end of the pony wall should line up with a wall stud. Use the framing square to make sure the pony wall is straight.

Nail the pony wall to the interior wall stud. Use the hammer to drive a 16d nail through the end stud in the pony wall into the interior wall stud. Place a nail near the top of the pony wall stud and one near the bottom of the pony wall stud. Place additional nails every 12 inches along the pony wall stud to secure it to the interior wall stud.

Drive a 16d nail through the sole plate to connect the end of the pony wall to the floor. Strike the nail with the hammer until it is flush with the sole plate. The nail should be centered between the last set of studs near the end of the pony wall. Place another 16d nail through the sole plate near the last stud to provide additional anchor support to the wall.
