How to Build Your Own Log Wall Panel

Their natural, hand-hewn quality gives log homes warm, rustic appeal. Give your home the look of real logs with log wall siding. Manufacturers cut boards with one flat side and one rounded side to create log siding. Installation typically consists of securing the boards directly to the wall. If you need wall panels, however, attach siding instead to sheets of plywood. Sided sheets then become panels, which you can use to decorate any interior or exterior spaces.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut log siding boards to 8-foot lengths for a horizontal wall panel. Cut log siding boards to 4-foot lengths for a vertical wall panel.

    • 2

Sand the cut ends to remove any frays or splinters.

    • 3

Apply zigzagging beads of wood glue to the backsides of the boards. Affix the boards tightly together on top of a sheet of plywood.

    • 4

Drive wood screws through the back of the plywood and into the logs. Along the path of each log, space the screws 14 to 16 inches apart and alternate their placements above and below center.

    • 5

Locate the wall studs before hanging the panel. Hang the panel by driving screws through the siding and into the studs. Countersink the screw heads to sit just below the surface of the siding boards. Fill the holes with wood filler.

    • 6

Caulk seams around or between panels, if installing outdoors. Stain and seal or paint the panel as desired.
