How to Fix Fiberglass Gaps

Gaps in fiberglass insulation may not seem like a big problem, but you can actually lose a lot of heat through these small spaces. Fix these gaps to keep warm air inside the home and cool air out. This saves on your heating and cooling bills and prevents drafts. Look for gaps in fiberglass insulation in areas that are difficult to fill, such as around piping or windows.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare for working with fiberglass insulation by wearing goggles, dust mask, gloves, a long-sleeved shirt and long pants and tucking your clothes in so you don't have any openings for the fiberglass to go. Fiberglass is irritating to the skin.

    • 2

Cut the fiberglass insulation with large shears so it fits the gap. You can also tear the insulation if you don't have shears.

    • 3

Press the insulation into the gap so it fits tightly without any more gaps. Use a ruler to wedge the insulation into position.

    • 4

Open fiberglass by peeling it in half and press one half behind pipes to fill this gap. Use the other half in front of the pipe to finish insulating.
