Alternatives to Drywall for Finishing Batt Walls

While drywall is a relatively inexpensive wall material, the installation process is laborious and involves taping, mudding and finishing. There are alternatives to drywall that can be hung over batt walls, or walls with fiberglass batt insulation. Most of these alternatives will require less work, but one in particular, plastering, will require more. However, the finished look is worth it for many who choose this option.
  1. Plywood

    • Plywood is an acceptable alternative to drywall. Unlike drywall, plywood seams do not have to be taped or mudded, and the installation process is much easier. Use a higher grade of plywood and finish it before you put it up on the wall.

    Wood Paneling

    • Wood paneling can be used over walls with fiberglass batt insulation. Wood paneling is also easier to install, and if it is pre-finished, there is no work after it's hung. Wood paneling comes in both wood grain patterns as well as designer patterns that do not have paneling grooves.

    Plaster

    • Plaster can be installed over walls with fiberglass batt insulation, but it is a laborious process. The walls must be covered with a lath material and the plaster is applied over that. This material is typically chosen by those who prefer the old-world look of plaster. Plastering a wall is a job that is best left to a professional.

    Other Paneling Options

    • If the walls are in a garage or a work-room area, consider using pegboard paneling instead of drywall. This provides more options for organization. Other alternatives to drywall include dry erase board paneling, which is ideal for a child's room or a playroom and vinyl paneling, which can be useful for work areas. Tileboard works well in a bathroom, kitchen or other area exposed to high levels of humidity or water.
