How to Bond Drywall Board to Styrofoam

Styrofoam is sometimes used in conjunction with drywall to increase the insulating properties of a structure. The two boards are somewhat soft, making it challenging to nail them together. However, you can bond them using the right adhesive. This creates a bond that is permanent so once the boards are in place you won't need to reglue them. Many types of foam are available for insulating walls so use one that is best suited to your situation.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert a tube of construction adhesive into a caulking gun. Cut the tip off and insert a nail into the nozzle to release the adhesive. Use a construction adhesive designed for both foam and drywall surfaces. The wrong adhesive can eat through the foam.

    • 2

Apply continuous lines of the adhesive around the edges of the drywall board. Keep the adhesive at least two inches from the edge because it expands as it dries.

    • 3

Press the drywall against the Styrofoam and smooth it into position so it lays flat. Work quickly because the adhesive is permanent once it sets.
