How to Cut Angles on Studs

Angling your studs allows you to create a wide range of intricate architectural features in your home you generally couldn’t accomplish with flat-edged studs. A miter saw is one of the fastest and most accurate ways to achieve the corner you desire. Its blade adjusts to a wide range of angles, allowing you to tailor it to your project as necessary. Identify the angle you need before completing the cut, though, or you will find that you’ve wasted valuable building materials.

  Review the instructions included with your model of miter saw. These instructions tell you how to adjust the angle of your saw to achieve the correct results and they will vary depending on the brand of saw you use. Set the saw to the appropriate angle for the stud.

  Place your stud on the miter saw table. Create a mark at the longest point for your stud. For example, if you’re cutting a 45-degree angle on your stud, place the mark on the high side of the angle.

  Don a pair of protective goggles and gloves to protect your sensitive eyes and skin from wood splinters. Pull your hair into a ponytail if it hangs lower than your shoulders.

  Start your saw and let it get to full speed before you start sawing. Position the stud against the fence of the miter saw table so the blade is positioned over the mark you made. Lower the miter saw at a steady rate into the stud, cutting through the wood at a precise angle.

  Lift the saw from the wood and turn it off. Pull the stud off the table once the blade comes to a complete halt. Sand the edge with 60-grit sandpaper to remove splinters and burn marks.
