How to Build a Temporary Wall in a Mobile Home

Mobile homes present certain challenges for the home repairer, yet they also allow for a certain amount of freedom regarding customized installations. Adding a temporary wall to a mobile home is useful when creating additional bedroom space due to an unforeseen change in housing requirements. Additional walls can add a studio or workspace or give additional privacy to an open floor plan. Temporary walls can be rustic with simply bare plywood, or can be finished using drywall and paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the locations of the studs in the wall and the joists in the floor using the stud finder. Pick a location to install the wall that lines up with the wall studs and possibly joists in the floor or ceiling. Position a plywood sheet against this wall with its four-foot side facing the ground and the eight-foot side against the wall. Cut the top of the board to fit if necessary to fit it to the ceiling.

    • 2

Position 1-inch L brackets every 12 inches along the wall against the plywood sheet. Mark the location of the screw holes into the wall and the plywood sheet using a pencil, making sure the wall markings lie on wall studs. Drill holes into the walls and the plywood sheet in each marking.

    • 3

Drill 3-inch wood screws through the L brackets and into the walls. Drill 1/2-inch screws through the other side of each bracket and into the plywood sheet. Repeat to attach all the L brackets to the plywood sheet and the wall.

    • 4

Follow the same procedure to secure the plywood sheet to the floor and ceiling using 3-inch screws if joists are present, or 1-inch screws if there are only floor and ceiling boards available. Use drywall anchors if there are no boards in the ceiling.

    • 5

Attach additional plywood sheets to the original sheet using straight 3-inch brackets stretched across the two sheets. Attach the new sheets to the floor and ceiling as before.
