How to Install a Halfen Brick System

The Halfen brick installation system allow new brick walls to be added to existing structures without sophisticated mooring systems. The tie rail system bolts directly into the standing structure to create a solid base for the brick to be adhere to. This simple and inexpensive system can be used with thin mortars to allow for the expansion and contraction of the brickwork without the damage usually incurred in a solid brick wall.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Pneumatic hammer
  • Halfen brick system, including anchoring brackets and hardware

Instructions

    • 1

Measure and mark every 20 inches from the base to the top of the structure to which you are going to adhere the Halfen brick system.

    • 2

Secure the Halfen side anchors to the structure with the hardware included in the Halfen kit. Use a pneumatic hammer to secure the hardware bolts tightly into the support structure. Make sure each side anchor is secured properly before going to the next step.

    • 3

Install the first three layers of brick so that every other layer is tied in. This will require a brick cutter. Cut the first brick of the second layer in half and lay it to create the pattern. Mortar all bricks in place with a thin mortar. Use a trowel to apply the mortar and scrape any excess from the front of the brick joints. The third layer of bricks should butt up against the bottom Halfen side anchor.

    • 4

Secure the side anchor to the brick with the included hardware. The flat head bolt that is included can be driven in with a drill with a Phillips head bit or with a pneumatic hammer similarly equipped.

    • 5

Install the next layer of brick and mortar it in place. The brick with the anchor secured to it can also be mortared to give a finished look. Continue installing layers of brick using the same method until the wall is finished.
