How to Support a Falling Brick Garage Wall

Brick garage walls face constant exposure from ice, snow and other environmental dangers. The brick goes through a freeze-thaw process, where the bricks expand and contract in terms of size. Every time the brick size changes, it loosens the surrounding mortar, which leads to the bricks sliding out of place. You might notice the brick wall leaning to one side or completely falling down. Supporting the brick wall with wood boards supports the wall while you fix the damage.

  • 2-inch-by-4-inch-by-6-foot boards
  • Shovel

Instructions

    • 1

Lean 2-inch-by-4-inch-by-6-foot boards against the brick wall. Push the boards as close to the brick as possible, which props up the wall. Dig a small hole 6 inches in front of the end of each board. Insert the board into the hole and pack the dirt down around the board.

    • 2

Locate the damaged or loose bricks on the wall. Scrape the mortar away from the brick with a chisel. Scrape the chisel through the mortar until the brick falls loose from the wall. Repeat this step with each of the remaining loose bricks.

    • 3

Fill a plastic bucket with warm water and drop the bricks in the liquid. After two hours, remove the bricks from the water and lay on the ground. Rinse the bricks with fresh water from a garden hose. Shake any excess water from each brick.

Apply a ½-inch layer of pre-mixed mortar to the brick wall. Apply a thin layer to the sides of one brick and insert back into the wall. Tap the top of the brick until it sits even with the surrounding bricks. A small amount of mortar should squeeze out from between the bricks. Repeat this step with any other bricks you removed.

Wipe the wall with a damp towel, removing the excess mortar from the surrounding bricks. Fill the areas around the brick with more mortar, if the wall needs it. Spread the mortar over the bricks with the trowel and wipe off any excess for a smooth finish. Let the mortar cure for 24 hours before removing the wood boards.
