How to Install CertainTeed Drywall

Measure the walls in the room from floor to ceiling. Use this measurement to purchase an appropriate amount of CertainTeed drywall from the approved retailer.

Lay two panels of drywall on sawhorses, with the light colored side facing up, horizontally in front of the first wall to be installed. Mark the two panels to the exact measurement of where the ceiling, windows and outlets are on the wall using a pencil and measuring tape.

Cut the outlet and window holes out of the drywall panels using a keyhole saw. Cut along the ceiling line with a box cutter by running over the line with the blade four times to cut completely through to the paper on the other side.

Place the bottom of the two panels on the wall first. Secure the CertainTeed drywall to the studs using 1 5/8-inch screws and a cordless drill. Place the screws 12 inches apart along the studs.

Place the top of the two panels on the wall next. The beveled edge of the CertainTeed drywall will fit with the beveled edge of the first panel smoothly. Secure this panel to the wall with 1 5/8-inch screws and a cordless drill. Place the screws 12 inches apart along the studs.

Continue measuring, marking, cutting and securing the drywall to the other walls in the room.

Place embedding tape over the seams of the panels on each wall and in each corner. Also place the tape over screw heads. Smooth out the tape and its edges for a smooth wall.

Spread plaster over the tape with a mud knife being careful to not clump the plaster or chip or cut the light tan drywall paper with the edge of the mud knife. Allow the plaster to dry overnight.

Sand the plaster with a fine-grit sandpaper rubbing gently to remove only bumps and lines caused by the mud knife. Do not rub hard or the plaster will be removed completely.

Decorate your new walls as you desire.
