How to Install Crown Molding Above a Door

Crown molding comes in many different styles and widths. It sits at an angle covering the corner where the wall meets the ceiling. When you plan to install crown molding above a door, first ensure that the molding will fit between the top of the door and the ceiling. If it does not, select a narrower molding that will. All crown molding gets nailed to the wall's top plate, which is the horizontal board that spans the top of the wall studs.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Miter saw
  • Finishing nails
  • Pneumatic nail gun

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the crown molding's width, from the bottom edge to the top edge. Lock the tape measure open to this length and hold it above the door to see if there will be enough space to install the crown molding.

    • 2

Measure the length above the door, from either a corner or the end of the last piece of crown molding you installed.

    • 3

Transfer the measurement from Step 2 onto a piece of crown molding. If you measured from a corner in Step 2, set a miter saw to a 45-degree angle and cut about 1 inch off the crown molding's end, then measure down the molding from the cut end and make a mark.

    • 4

Set the crown molding on the miter saw table. Position it as it will be placed on the wall, using the miter saw's fence for support. Cut the crown molding on the mark. If the cut end reaches a corner, keep the miter saw set at a 45-degree angle and make the cut.

    • 5

Lift the crown molding over the door. Position it so its top edge rests on the ceiling and its bottom edge rests on the wall. Drive finishing nails through the crown molding's bottom edge and into the wall's top plate.
