How to Build Sliding Screen Room Dividers

Sliding screen room dividers are an elegant addition to a room, whether for purely decorative purposes or to provide privacy. This design works on bypass door hardware of the sort typically used on closets. The doors slide along a track so they cover the opening completely when closed. When open, one door slides behind the other. The design is adjustable for varying ceiling heights and room widths.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the space the sliding doors will cover. Buy a bypass door track to fit the space or buy multiple tracks for a large expanse. Use a hacksaw to cut the door track to fit the space, if necessary.

    • 2

Install the upper door track. Hold the track against the ceiling and use a pencil to mark the ceiling at the screw holes in the track. Drill pilot holes in the ceiling for the screws. Use the screws provided with the kit to secure the track to the ceiling.

    • 3

Screw the rollers included in the kit to the top of the sliding screen about 3 inches from the ends of each screen. Drill pilot holes in the top of the screen and the roller assembly if necessary and screw the rollers in place.

    • 4

Hold the screen upright at a slight angle and slide the rollers into the track. Use the dial on the included bracket to adjust the height of the screen. Screw the rollers into the other screen and slide it onto the track.

    • 5

Use the door glides included in the kit to keep the screens from swinging at the bottom. Line one up with the bottom of each screen and screw it into the floor.
