How to Determine Amounts for Patio Pavers

Pavers can be assembled in a myriad of designs to create an aesthetically pleasing walkway or patio. Cement forms allow pavers to be manufactured in any style, such as bricks, faux stones and tiles. Manufactured and natural stones offer the same flexibility. Building a patio out of pavers requires planning. The number of pavers needed depends on the size of the patio. To calculate the number of pavers needed, you must first choose the type of paver you desire and the size of the area to be covered.

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the paver chosen. Multiply the two measurements together to determine the surface area.

    • 2

Measure the area for the patio. Most patios are square so measure the length and width. Multiply the two measurements together to determine the total surface area. Separate irregularly shaped patios into square and triangle sections. Measure and calculate the area for each section individually. Add the area for each section together to determine the total surface area.

    • 3

Divide the total surface area by the surface area of the paver. This number represents the minimum number of pavers necessary to cover the area. Multiply the number by 1.2 to determine how many pavers are needed for the area. Multiplying by 1.2 will give you 20 percent more pavers than you need, allowing for stones that need to be cut in half or the replacement of damaged stones during installation.
