How to Seal Exposed Aggregate Concrete Walkways

According to the Concrete Network, "an exposed aggregate surface is rugged, nonskid and resistant to heavy traffic and weather extremes." Aggregate consists of the pebbles embedded in the surface of cement. Finishing an exposed aggregate walkway creates a rich, moist color that resists fading or staining. Purchase a sealant that does not yellow, is resistant to oils and stain and that can be reapplied annually. Sealing aggregate takes a single afternoon with the proper materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface of the aggregate thoroughly with a concrete cleanser and a water hose. Most aggregate sealants can be applied while the surface is damp, but avoid leaving any puddles of standing water.

    • 2

Mix the sealant according to the directions. Avoid using power tools or rapidly stirring the mixture. Bubbles and froth can leave air pockets on the surface of the walkway.

    • 3

Apply thin coats of the sealant using a paintbrush or roller. Do not leave puddles of the sealant on the surface of the walkway. A single coat should be sufficient. Reapply if necessary, but allow each coat to fully dry in accordance with manufacturer's directions before applying additional coats.
