Remove rocks, grass and other objects from the walkway. The width of your concrete walkway should be at least 5 feet, which will enable wheelchairs to gain access.
Dig the walkway to a depth of four inches with a trowel. Fill in soft spots with sand or gravel. Smooth and level the area with a rake.
Purchase Masonite-type siding to use as the form, which will keep the concrete in the desired shape until it cures. Support the form by inserting one 2-by-4-inch stake into the ground every three feet. Attach the stakes to the outside of the form with double-headed nails.
Check to see if the top of the form is level before pouring the concrete. Wear protective gear such as gloves, rubber boots, safety goggles and protective clothing to prevent burns when mixing the concrete. Mix the concrete based on the instructions on the package.
Pour the concrete into the forms, starting from the corner, then work your way down. Level the concrete with a wood straight edge or a 2-by-4. Level the concrete by moving the straight edge in a side-to-side motion.
Create a textured surface for your concrete walkway with a broom. Apply gentle pressure with the broom while sweeping the concrete. This will prevent slips and falls when the concrete is dry and solid.
