How to Resurface Flagstone Concrete

Flagstone is considered by many to be much more attractive than a plain, concrete surface. This is because the uneven, unsymmetrical stone causes the eye to wander and explore the entire piece. Many walkways are laid with flagstone to give them a more appealing look. If you have a concrete walkway you would like to resurface with flagstone, you can accomplish this project relatively easily with a little preparation and some hard work.

Things You'll Need

  • High-pressure washer
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Fine sand
  • Portland cement
  • Plastic

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the thickness of the flagstone you wish to install. Keep this number in a safe place for later use.

    • 2

Clean the existing concrete surface with a high-pressure washer. Your garden hose will not remove all the particles that cling to the surface of your concrete walkway. You can remove them with a scrub brush, though this adds time and effort to your project.

    • 3

Build form work out of lumber to prevent the binding materials from spreading while they dry. The easiest way to build form work is with 1-by-4-inch lumber partially buried into the borders along your walkway.

    • 4

Mix your cement with water and fine sand to produce the concrete overlay that will bind your new surface to the old one. Use one part cement for every two parts sand before adding the water.

    • 5

Apply a mixture of cement and water to the concrete surface. This produces a substance called concrete paint that will help the new and old surfaces bond together.

    • 6

Pour your wet concrete on top of the concrete paint within minutes of applying the concrete paint. You may find it helpful to section off parts of your walkway with another 1-by-4 so that you are only pouring a small amount of concrete at a time. Pour only enough concrete to meet the thickness of the flagstone that you measured earlier.

    • 7

Place your flagstone into the wet concrete while wearing a fresh pair of gloves so that you do not smear wet concrete onto the top surface of your flagstone. Arrange the flagstone into a pattern that appeals to you.

    • 8

Cover the top borders of your form work with plastic to allow the new surface to cure slowly. Give the new surface at least three days to bond to the old surface before removing the cover and form work.
