Measure out 4 inches from each side of the walkway. Run string from the steps to the end of the walkway to mark the edging path. Four inches will allow room for the sand, but if the width of your pavers are wider than 3 inches, increase the width of the trench. You want to leave at least 1 inch for the sand.
Start at the entrance step. Dig a trench along the sides out to the string. The depth of the trench depends on the depth of the paver. The paver should fit even with the walkway. Tamp the bottom of the trench, making a flat surface for the paver. Place the first paver on its side in the trench and use a level to assure it is even.
Place a second brick against the first. Tamp the brick in place until it is level with the first. Continue this process until all edging pavers are laid. Be sure the pavers are even with the walkway. Fill the trench with sand, tamping down and securing bricks. Cut brick to fit areas around curves.
Pour sand over the brick pavers and fill spaces by running a brush over the area. Do not leave any open spaces. Use a plate compactor if necessary to fill any spaces. Use the spray bottle to wet the sand and pack it into the spaces. Wash the pavers using the spray bottle, avoiding dislodging the sand but enough to clean the surface. Repeat if necessary.
