How Low Moisture Content Affects Cement Stabilized Soils

When an area is cleared to install cement or asphalt, such as for a driveway or road, the soil density and moisture content need to be analyzed. In fact, some soils are stabilized with cement to provide a better base.

    • Cement stabilized soils, a mixture of soil or aggregate and cement, allow the soil content to be more stable for an application of asphalt or cement on top of it. This helps curb the possibility for cracks within the material, though moisture can still play a part in this process.

    Considerations

    • If a cement stabilized soil area has a low moisture content, it can have a better tendency to not create cracks within the base. Subsequently, the lack of base cracks will not be reflected up onto the surface of the asphalt or concrete installation, allowing a longer lifespan for the road or driveway.

    Features

    • A tightly packed cement stabilized soil, along with the low moisture content, also contributes to less cracking tendencies. Using a non-vibrating compaction method is key for keeping the integrity of the cement stabilized soil sound.
