DIY Road Bike Stand

Building yourself a bike stand for road bikes is a great way to encourage green transportation. Also this allows you to give your kids and their friends a great place to secure their bikes to prevent theft. A simple bike stand can be constructed over a weekend with a few simple materials bought at the local hardware store. This bike stand will be stoutly constructed and provide many years of good use.

Instructions

    • 1

Construct a rectangle measuring 4-feet-long by 3-feet-high by using two of the 4-foot long 2-by-4's and two of the 3-foot long 2-by-4's. Use the hammer and nails to attach them end on end to one another to make the rectangle.

    • 2

Use the hammer and nails to attach the remaining two 3-foot long 2-by-4's into the center of the rectangle as cross braces parallel to the 3-foot long ends. Use the ruler to place these 16 inches from either end when you attach them to the rectangle. These will be the standing pieces that bikes can be locked around after their wheels have been placed through the stand when it is finished.

    • 3

Stand the rectangle vertical on one of its 4-foot long sides. Use the hammer and nails to attach the remaining two 4-foot long 2-by-4's at the bottom of the rectangle perpendicular to the lengthwise 4-foot pieces on the rectangle. These make the stabilizing braces at the bottom of the stand. The stand is basically finished at this point except for painting.

    • 4

Place soap and water on the old rag and use this to scrub off any dirt that may have gotten onto the stand during the construction. This is needed to fully prepare the stand for painting. A stand free and clear of dirt will hold the paint better than a dirty one. Give the stand about one hour to dry after you clean it before you start painting it.

    • 5

Use the paint brush and exterior grade latex paint to paint the stand. Once the stand has been painted, allow it about 24 hours for the paint to fully dry before using the stand. At this point the stand is fully ready and can be used. To use the stand, simply insert the bike's front tire through the 3-foot high uprights of the box and then tie the bike to the rack with a bike lock.
