How to Mix Cement by Hand

Mixing cement by hand is a process that is useful for small batches. If a piece of cement is damaged and needs to be removed or you are adding a small walkout area, you can save some money by mixing in a wheelbarrow. By mixing in a wheelbarrow you can start at your water source and then carry the finished product over to your project.

  Pour the dry cement into the wheelbarrow.

  Spray water into the wheelbarrow to cover the cement. Start mixing with the hoe.

  Add more water to the mix and continue to combine the cement and water. Do not put too much water in at one time. It is best to add a little at a time and mix with the hoe for a while. When the cement reaches the consistency of oatmeal and all the lumps are broken down. You can now transport it to your work site.
