Mark the perimeter of the area to be paved with pegs and string.
Dig out the marked area 4 inches to 6 inches deep.
Determine the slope of the excavated area. Proper drainage of paved surfaces is facilitated by a 2 percent, or 1/4-inch per 1 foot, slope.
Spread a 2-inch deep base of crushed rock evenly over the excavated area. Wet the paver base with a garden hose and tamp it down with a hand tamp or a power vibrating machine. Allow the base to dry overnight.
Cover the paver base with a 1-inch layer of paver sand. Smooth the sand with a straight wood plank.
Lay the Harvard pavers side by side in the excavated area, starting at one side and working to the other side. Arrange the surface textures randomly or according to a predetermined pattern.
Spread paver sand on top of the installed Harvard pavers. Use a wide push broom to sweep the sand back and forth across the pavers to fill the cracks between the stones with sand.
Run a vibrating compactor over the surface of the stones to compact the sand. Add more paver sand and sweep over the surface again. Compact the sand with the vibrating compactor again until all the cracks between the stones are filled with sand.
