How to Build a Ramp for a Mini Dachshund to Get on a Bed

Mini dachshunds have elongated backs that can cause a lot of stress and pain on the spine throughout their active years. To prevent back problems in young dogs and help older dogs with painful back problems, you can build a bed ramp that your dog can easily climb up and down to get to the bed. Building a bed ramp yourself is simple and can save you hundreds of dollars compared to purchasing a ramp from a store.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Plywood
  • Saw or power saw
  • 3 metal brackets
  • Carpet
  • Wood glue
  • Power drill
  • Screws

Instructions

    • 1

Take measurements for the ramp using a standard tape measure. Measure from the top of the bed straight down to the floor. Choose the ideal angle of the ramp, and using that angle, measure from the top of the bed to the floor.

    • 2

Measure and cut out the plywood base for the bottom of the ramp. This makes it easy for the dog to get on and off the bed. An ideal size would be 12 by 12 inches. Use a saw or power saw to cut the wood.

    • 3

Cut out a piece of rectangle plywood that is 12 inches wide and the length of the angled measurement taken in Step 1. This will be your actual ramp.

    • 4

Cut out two triangular pieces of plywood, which will support the sides of the ramp. Use a tape measure, and cut the plywood according to the measurement and angle that you determined in Step 1.

    • 5

Screw in a metal bracket underneath the 12 by 12 base and ramp piece to connect the two. Use four screws in each corner for support. The metal bracket will be half on the base and half on the ramp. Power drill screws from the ramp to the slanted support pieces. Use five screws on each side. Fill the top of the screws and any wood cracks with wood glue. Wait a few minutes for the wood glue to dry.

    • 6

Flip the structure over. Place the other two metal brackets on the inside bottom of the ramp, and screw them in with the power drill. These brackets will add support to the ramp and prevent cracks in the wood.

    • 7

Measure and cut a strip of carpet to cover the whole ramp. Layer wood glue on the ramp, and lay the carpet flat. Push on the middle and out toward the edges to flatten any bubbles on the rug.

Test out the ramp with your dachshund once the wood glue dries. Make sure no pieces of wood or screws are sticking out.
