Installing Disappearing Stairs

Disappearing stairs are a series of collapsible stairway and ladder products. They fold into an opening in a ceiling and open to create a stairway. Homeowners most commonly use disappearing stairs as access points for an attic. Installing disappearing stairs poses several challenges but also has benefits for homeowners.
  1. Benefits

    • Installing disappearing stairs offers fast, safe access to an attic, loft or upper story. Unlike permanent stairways, they consume less space when not in use and are easier and less expensive to build or install. Disappearing stairways are also more convenient and safe than ladders, which are prone to slipping and need to be retrieved every time you want to access the upper floor.

    Positioning

    • Selecting the position for disappearing stairs is an important element of the planning process. The best place for disappearing stairs is directly between two ceiling joists for maximum support. Different types if disappearing stairs have different widths and clearance needs. Carefully measure the space below the stairs to ensure that you have adequate room to open the stairs safely once they're installed, remembering that some types of disappearing stairs swing backward as they open.

    Process

    • Each type of disappearing staircase comes with its own installation requirements. In each case the process begins with cutting a rough opening in the ceiling. Next you'll need to build a frame for the stairway by nailing new joists to the existing joists. The edges of the stairway opening that run perpendicular to the ceiling joists will require new double joists for support. Affixing the stairs and the lowering mechanism, which consists of springs, catches or brackets, completes the installation.

    Dangers

    • Installing disappearing stairs can be a dangerous task without the proper equipment and knowledge. Cutting into the ceiling is only safe when you know the position of electrical wiring and duct work. Standing on a ladder while raising the disappearing stairs into place may require multiple workers. Improper installation can cause the stairs to fall unexpectedly or prevent them from bearing the weight of a user, leading to a fall.
