How to Get Rounded Stairs

Rounded edges on stairs are attractive, reduce impact stress, and close the gap between stair treads and risers. When building a staircase from scratch, stair molding, also called stair nosing, achieves this rounded look. Stair molding, which is available at home improvement stores, covers each stair’s front and should match the flooring’s width and thickness over the stair treads.

Instructions

    • 1

Glue a flooring plank over the stair tread, leaving a gap between the plank’s edge and the riser. Make the gap just large enough to accommodate the stair nosing’s width.

    • 2

Place the stair molding slightly overlapping the flooring plank and the step’s edge. There should be a seamless transition from the plank riser’s nosing.

    • 3

Drill starter holes every 10 inches through the stair nosing into the riser’s edge.

    • 4

Attach the nosing to the riser, using construction adhesive and 1 1/8 inch screws.

    • 5

Repeat the entire process for each step.
