How to Dig a Hole Under a Sidewalk

If you're adding lights to your yard, or a sprinkler system, it may require digging under a sidewalk if it is in the pathway of the system. Without the proper precautions, digging a hole under a sidewalk may cause the sidewalk to collapse. Small holes, 2 inches or less, can be dug under the concrete without affecting the sidewalk.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a 12-inch-deep trench perpendicular with the sidewalk.

    • 2

Set the wand of your pressure washer into the trench.

    • 3

Put on safety goggles. Turn on the water supply to the pressure washer and switch the machine on according to the machine's instruction manual.

    • 4

Squeeze the trigger of the pressure washer to blast a hole 1 foot (12 inches) below the sidewalk. The water will eat away at the dirt. Inspect your spray on occasion to make sure it is straight.

    • 5

Cut a PVC pipe that is the diameter of your tunnel at a sharp angle using a hacksaw to make a shovel. Shove the pipe into the tunnel area to clean out the hole and make it round.
