How to Determine The Number of Pavers You Need for a Patio or Walkway

Instead of using a traditional solid blacktop or concrete mix, some home owners opt for a more aesthetically pleasing look to visually break up the surface of their patio or walkway. Paving stones are an attractive look, and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The stones can be expensive, so you don't want to wind up purchasing more than are necessary for your particular patio or walkway. Determining the amount of stones you need involves only some simple math.

Measure the length and width of your patio or walkway in feet with a measuring tape. Multiply each measurement by the number 12 in order to convert the feet to inches. Multiply these two measurements to obtain the total square inches of the patio or walkway.

Measure the length and width of the paver stone you would like to purchase in inches. Multiply the length and width to get the total square inches of the paver stone.

    • 3

Divide the total square-inch measurement of the patio and walkway by the total square-inch measurement of a single paver stone. The quotient will determine how many stones you need for your walkway.

Add 5 percent to the calculation for edging and broken paver stones during delivery. In order to add 5 percent to the estimation multiply the number of paver stones you need by 1.05.
