How to Attach a Simple Handrail to Cement Steps

Concrete stairs often require a handrail for safety. The addition of a simple metal handrail is the most cost-effective solution. A metal handrail can be purchased at a local hardware or home improvement store. Hand rails come in many designs, which allows for a selection appropriate for the decor of the home.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the height of the handrail. Standard building code requires the hand rail to be no higher than 36 inches from the top of the stair tread, and no lower than 30 inches.

    • 2

Measure down from the top of the handrail the desired height and make a mark on the post with the pencil. Do this on both posts for the railing. This mark will line up with the top of the stair treads when installed.

    • 3

Measure up from the bottom of each post 3 inches and make a mark. This will be where the first mounting hole will go.

    • 4

Measure up 6 inches from the first mounting hole on the bottom stair post and make a mark. This is where the second mounting hole will go on this post. If 6 inches can not be achieved, make sure the second hole is at least 2 inches from the first.

    • 5

Measure up from the first hole on the back post, 12 inches and make a mark. If 12 inches can not be achieved, make sure the second mounting hole for this post is no closer than 6 inches to the first.

    • 6

Drill holes in the handrail posts at all four marks with the 3/8 metal drill bit. Make sure the holes are straight and go completely through the post.

    • 7

Hold the hand rail in place on the steps, with the height marks lined up to the top of the threads. This will require a second person.

    • 8

Slide the pencil through the mounting holes and mark the concrete. This will mark where to drill the concrete. Set the handrail aside.

    • 9

Set the drill to the hammer drill setting and drill holes at all the marks with the 3/8 masonry drill bit. Make sure the holes are at least 1 1/2 inches deep on solid steps. Pre-cast hollow steps can be drilled through.

    • 10

Use the hammer to hammer the concrete anchor bolts into the mounting holes. make sure to leave the nut on the end of the bolt to keep from damaging the threads. This will also ensure the anchor will not fall through pre-cast hollow steps. If the anchors go through to the nut, pull them out until the wedge section contacts the concrete.

    • 11

      Remove the nuts and washers.

    • 12

Place the handrail on the mounting anchors. Install the nuts and washers and tighten with the appropriate sized wrench. Pre cast steps with a overhang on the sides will require a spacer between the post and concrete. This can be made by stacking washers on the anchor bolt to fill the gap.

    • 13

Tighten the nuts until the handrail does not move when shaken vigorously.

    • 14

Cut off the excess bolt with the hacksaw. Cut even with the top of the nut.
