Definition of Newel Post

In architecture and carpentry, there are many ways of supporting the banisters or railings that line a set of stairs. In Western architecture, banisters or railings are often supported by newel posts.
  1. Identification

    • A newel post is a wooden, vertical column positioned at the base of a staircase where the banister ends.

    Number

    • If a staircase is positioned against a wall on one side, there is usually only one newel post, while free-standing stair cases usually have two newel posts.

    Size

    • Newel posts typically range in height from 52 inches to 59 inches, though some may be as tall as 65 inches.

    Design

    • Newel post tops can be flat or rounded like a ball; the latter is referred to as a finial top. Newel posts are often elaborately decorated with carvings.

    Function

    • Newel posts serve as a means of support for the banister of a staircase. In some cases, newel posts also provide support to the risers or steps on the stairs or to a landing.
