How to Change the Bathroom Bulb Fixture With Three Turnscrews

Bathroom light fixtures are held onto the wall via a mounting bracket that is attached to a gang box in the wall or to the wall itself. The mounting bracket will have a set of protruding screws that the light fixture slips over. Turnscrews are then threaded onto the screws and tightened to hold the light fixture in place. If your current light fixture has three turnscrews, you're not limited in what you replace it with, as long as you replace the mounting bracket when changing the fixture.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power to the light circuit at the circuit breaker panel.

    • 2

Place a portable light in the bathroom or where a headlamp if necessary for adequate lighting.

    • 3

Loosen the three turnscrews with your fingers. If they're too tight, use a set of pliers to loosen them.

    • 4

Pull the lighting fixture off of the protruding mounting screws of the mounting bracket. Reach behind the fixture and loosen the wire nuts connecting the fixture's wiring to the home wiring. If the fixture's green ground wire is connected to a screw in the outlet box, loosen the screw and take the wire off. Remove the light fixture.

    • 5

Loosen the screws holding the old mounting bracket onto the wall and remove the bracket.

    • 6

Place the new mounting bracket in place against the wall and mark the location of the mounting screw holes on the wall with a pencil. Remove the bracket. Drill holes in each of these locations and insert hollow wall anchors into the wall. Replace the bracket and insert screws through the bracket and into the anchors. Tighten with a screwdriver to secure the bracket to the wall.

Match the wires of the new fixture to the home wiring -- black to black, white to white and green to bare. If there is no bare wire, attach the green wire to the outlet box's ground screw. Slide wire nuts over the ends of the wires and twist to tighten.

Slide the fixture over the protruding screws of the mounting bracket and twist on the turnscrews to hold the fixture in place. Put bulbs in then fixture and turn on the power.
